Sloped properties are tricky. Left unmanaged, a grade like this one erodes over time, becomes a safety hazard, and makes the space basically unusable. The solution here wasn't complicated - but it had to be built right. That meant a full boulder retaining wall combined with natural stone steps to hold the grade and create safe, solid access from one level to the next.

The wall itself is dry-stacked natural stone - heavy, tightly fitted courses that work together to hold back serious earth pressure. This isn't decorative. It's structural. Every stone is placed with intention so the wall performs over the long haul without shifting or leaning. We also laid gravel along the base to help with drainage, which is one of the details that separates a wall that lasts from one that fails in a few years.

The steps are cut stone slabs - wide, flat, and substantial. Each one is set into a gravel bed so they stay level and stable underfoot. The flanking boulders on either side of the staircase anchor the whole thing visually and structurally. It gives the entry a clean, natural look that fits right into the wooded setting without looking out of place.

This kind of hardscape work is about more than just aesthetics. It's about solving a real problem on the property - stopping erosion, managing grade change, and giving people a safe way to move through the space. When it's done well with quality stone and proper base work, it holds up for decades with almost no maintenance required.
