A lot of yards have that one problem area. A slope that runs water where you don't want it. Ground that's impossible to mow, impossible to use, and honestly kind of a headache every time it rains. That's exactly what we were dealing with here.
We cut the hillside back and established a level grade across the area. That's the foundation of everything. Before any wall goes up, the ground has to be right - excavated clean, soil moved where it needs to go, and a clear bench cut into the slope. Get that wrong and nothing else works the way it should.
Once the grade was set, we started staging the boulders along the wall line. These aren't decorative stones. They're large, angular granite boulders - the kind that lock together and hold serious earth. A boulder retaining wall built on a properly prepped base will manage water runoff, hold back soil movement, and last for decades without much fuss.
The site work we do upfront is what makes the end result worth it. Rushing through excavation and site prep creates problems down the road - settling, shifting, water finding its way where it shouldn't. We'd rather do it right the first time.
If you've got a slope or an area of your yard that just isn't working for you, this kind of project is often more doable than people think. Smart grading and a well-built retaining wall can open up space you didn't know you had.
