Water runoff on a sloped backyard is one of those problems that looks manageable at first - until erosion starts eating into your yard and pooling water shows up right next to your foundation. That's exactly what we were dealing with here. A tight backyard with a significant slope, no real control over where the water was going, and very little usable space to show for it.
The approach we took was pretty straightforward once we had a plan. Large natural boulders were set along the hillside to create a stacked retaining wall that follows the natural curve of the slope. No straight lines, no rigid edges - just a clean, organic layout that works with the terrain instead of fighting it. Below the wall, we ran a gravel channel to catch and redirect runoff before it becomes anyone's problem.
We also built out a defined pathway using fresh topsoil, giving the homeowner a clear, functional route through the backyard. That kind of structure goes a long way in a space that used to feel chaotic. It separates the usable ground from the hillside and makes the whole yard feel intentional. This is the kind of hardscape work that does double duty - it looks great and solves a real drainage problem at the same time.
Budget was a factor on this job, and that's something we always take seriously. You don't need to spend a fortune to get work done right. The combination of natural boulder walls, crushed gravel drainage, and a clean pathway gave this homeowner a functional, good-looking backyard without blowing the budget. Good planning up front is what makes that possible.
